Other than buyuing a new keyboard for my laptop, or getting it serviced, does anyone have any ideas? Plugging another keyboard into a laptop is the short term solution but makes it non-portable in a practical sense.

I would get a small-footprint light keyboard, something that either has a touchpad or trackball included, or bundled with a trackball or mini-mouse. It won't be AS portable as your laptop on its own, but...
A final update, for those who keep track.
Had an appointment at the Apple Store for 3:40. Showed up an hour early, they saw me at 3.
Instantly diagnoses the problem as in the keyboard, not the motherboard or anything more serious. Bad news: the whole top of the laptop is one big piece, which must be replaced, and out of warranty. Good news: the same piece also has an inch long gash in it from where the casing split last year some time. And that gash is covered by the store's extended warranty plan. So they can replace the piece to fix the gash ... and fix the keyboard problem at the same time.
I go to the cafe to work on my D&D game for two hours.
Pick up the laptop with a new top piece. No gash. Keys work great. Looks brand new.
Cost to me: ~FREE~
Moral: I <3 Mac.
*grins* Glad to hear they were good about it. I thought they might be halfway decent from what I'd heard in the past. You don't generally get that sort of support from PC sellers, for sure.
